The many forms of shrinkage

Time & systems

Double handling, searching, waiting, repeated mistakes, manual work, poor handovers, disconnected POS data and decisions based on unreliable figures.

Where it comes from

Time shrinkage looks like busyness, which is exactly why it hides so well. Searching for a missing ticket, re-entering the same information twice because two systems don't talk to each other, a handover that leaves the next shift guessing, a decision made on a gut feeling because the actual figures cannot be trusted. Everyone is working hard. Some of that work is adding nothing.

The money issue

Time spent on avoidable friction is wages paid for work that produces no value, and a decision made on bad data is often worse than no decision at all, because it comes with false confidence attached. Fixing time and systems shrinkage rarely costs money — it mostly costs the discipline to stop and ask why a task is taking the time it takes.
