The many forms of shrinkage

Risk & resilience

Food safety, allergens, fire, employment, data, equipment, reputation and business interruption — knowledge that protects tomorrow's profit.

A shield, representing risk protection and resilience

Where it comes from

Risk shrinkage is the strangest category on this page, because most of the time it costs nothing at all. A missed temperature log, an out-of-date allergen matrix, a fire door propped open, a licence nobody checked the renewal date on — every day nothing happens is a day it looks like these things did not matter.

The money issue

The value of risk and resilience work is entirely in what did not happen, which makes it the easiest category to underfund and the most expensive one to have neglected on the one day it goes wrong. A single serious incident — a food safety failure, a fire, a data breach — can undo years of otherwise careful profit in a single event.
