The many forms of shrinkage

Emotional shrinkage

Owners who stop enjoying the business, managers carrying too much and good people losing pride. It is human — and commercially expensive.

Where it comes from

This one rarely gets named, because it does not feel like a business problem — it feels personal. An owner who used to love walking the floor and now dreads it. A manager quietly carrying the weight of decisions nobody else will make. Good people who have stopped taking pride in details they used to care about, not because they stopped caring, but because nobody noticed when they did.

The money issue

This is the hardest category on this page to put a figure on, and often the real reason an otherwise viable business gets sold under value, closed early, or simply run into the ground by someone who has run out of the will to keep noticing. Every other kind of shrinkage on this page depends on someone paying attention. Emotional shrinkage is what happens when the person who was paying attention quietly stops.
